The accused Manoranjan alias Rakal Siddhershwar Murkud (24) was arrested last night.
Assistant police inspector S D Jadhav of Ambarnath police said that Murkud entered the victim's house yesterday when other members of her family were away and tried to rape her.
As the victim, who was 35 years old, resisted, he stabbed her with a knife, killing her on the spot.
Murkud worked in the jeans-making unit run by the victim's husband, and stayed in the same locality, police said.
