Several police personnel, including the Circle Officer (Traffic) and Superintendent of Police (Crime), received a call from an unknown number yesterday with the caller identifying himself as DIG (Meerut) K Satyanarayan, they said.
The caller gave his account number asking the policemen to transfer money to his account for his brother's treatment.
Suspecting it to be a case of crank call, the policemen called up the DIG to check the authenticity of the claim who was taken aback by the incident, police said.
The police have registered cases of fraud in various police stations against the anonymous caller, police said.
An inquiry has also been initiated on the order of the DIG, they said.
