Police today said the man allegedly sacrificed the girl, his distant relative, to propitiate Goddess Kali in Badhi village under Oupada police station in Balasore district.
The girl, identified as Jasmin, was missing since April 3 and local people found her decomposed body from a nearby pond on April 7 when stench started emanating from there, police said.
During investigation, police interrogated the man who allegedly practised black magic, and his minor son.
After she died, his father threw the body into the pond, and threatened his son not to reveal it to anyone, police said adding that then the accused was detained for more questioning yesterday.
Police found a blood stained pot and an iron rod from the house of the accused.
