A 29-year-old man jumped to death from the three-storeyed Uttam Nagar Police Station building last night after police allegedly refused to register an FIR on his complaint.
The deceased, identified as Raju Narwal, a resident of Kali Basti area in Uttam Nagar had reached the police station around 11 PM to file an FIR against some people who had thrashed him.
While family of the deceased claimed that he was ill treated by the police and officials refused to register his complaint, police said that he was inebriated when he reached the police station and was asked to wait for his turn as they were attending to other complainants.
"He somehow climbed to the terrace and jumped. He landed on the porch of the building following which he was rushed to DDU hospital where he succumbed to his injuries," said a police official.
According to the family of the deceased, Narwal was last seen by them around 10 PM last night when he was called by somebody from outside his home. Later, around 2:30 AM some policemen reached his home and informed that he was badly injured and admitted at DDU hospital.
Victim's family and friends alleged that he was being continuously harassed by some people of the area as he had apparently loaned some money from them and was not able to repay it.
"The victim worked as a sweeper in the area. His clothes were torn when he had reached the police station," said a police official.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Ranvir Singh, Narwal had jumped around 11:30 AM from the police station's terrace. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 6:20 this morning.
"An FIR has been registered on his statement before his death against the persons who had allegedly thrashed him, one of them has been identified as Rohtash. Teams have been formed to nab him and his associates. As per doctors who treated him, he was fit for statement when it was recorded," he said.
Singh also said that he has ordered a detailed inquiry into the case and the area magistrate has been informed about the incident.
"We are objectively investigating the case and action will be taken if needed," he said.
