Man, mother sentenced to 10-year imprisonment for dowry death

A fast-track court today sentenced a 25-year-old man and his mother to 10-year imprisonment for burning his wife to death over dowry in neighbouring Shamli district in 2015.
Fast-track court judge Ombir Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 each on the convicts -- Mohit and his mother Basmati.
According to the prosecution lawyer, Punam was burnt to death by her husband and in-laws when she failed to meet their dowry demand at Lachmanpura village under Jhinjhana police station in Shamli district in western Uttar Pradesh on May 15, 2015, two years after her marriage.
