The Mata Amritanandamayi Mutt has donated Rs two crore to Cyclone Ockhi relief fund.
A cheque for the amount was handed over by Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri, Vice-Chairman of the Mutt, to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at his office here today, a mutt press release said.
Immediately following the disaster, volunteers of the Mutt had set up food relief camps for widows and hundreds of affected families, at times working in collaboration with local churches.
Free treatment for the injured was also offered at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi, the release said.
The Mutt and its worldwide counterpart 'Embracing the World,' has contributed over Rs 475 crore in disaster relief since 2005, coming to the aid of victims of such tragedies as the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the Chennai floods of 2015, the Uttarakhand flash-flooding of 2013, the Japan earthquake/ Tsunami of 2011, and the US hurricanes of 2005.
Cyclone Ockhi hit the Kerala coast in November 29-30 last year in the southern districts of the state, claiming several lives.
