Charging Prime Minister Narendra
Modi-led BJP government with betraying Tamil people by working with Sri Lankan government and pushing Hindutva agenda in Tamil Nadu, Vaiko-led MDMK today quit the NDA.
MDMK's decision to quit the NDA comes few days before BJP president Amit Shah is scheduled to visit the state on a two-day trip aimed at strengthening the party in the southern state.
Addressing the press after a high-level committee unanimously passed a resolution to quit the NDA, Vaiko showered praises on the Vajpayee-led NDA government remarking, "Modi's BJP government is different from Vajpayee's BJP government."
MDMK's decision to exit from the six-party alliance the BJP stitched ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, also comes at a time when leaders from the saffron party had called for the ouster of Vaiko's party in the wake of his criticism of Modi and his government.
"We are very happy to quit the NDA. But we have no regret to join the alliance. Politics is a journey. We took the decision to join NDA hoping they would work for the interests of Tamils. But they betrayed us," Vaiko said addressing the press after the series of meetings he chaired.
The resolution moved by party supremo Vaiko at the District Secretaries conclave declared that "MDMK can no more be part of the BJP-led NDA as the saffron party-led government has been insensitive to a host of issues concerning Tamil Nadu including Mullaperiyar dam issue".
BJP, however, downplayed MDMK's exit from the NDA.
Tamil Nadu unit BJP president Tamizhisai Soundararajan said, "When Vaiko criticised the Prime Minister. I had requested him not to do that. But when he continued to criticise, we had some doubts, which has now been confirmed by their decision."
Replying to a query, she said, "May be he would have been strong if he had remained in the alliance. But nothing can stop the BJP-led alliance from coming to power in Tamil Nadu in 2016.
