The youngest son of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who was on the run after being sentenced to a year in jail for possessing and using hashish, was arrested early today at a railway station here, security officials said.
19-year-old Abdullah Morsi was arrested when the security officials were searching the trains en route to upper Egypt, MENA news agency reported.
Abdullah was on the run after being charged with possession and using hashish, was sentenced by Banha Court on July 2, one year in prison and 10,000 EGP (USD1,400) fines for him and his friend, who was with him in the car when they were arrested, security officials said.
Abdullah was not present at court when the verdict was issued. He was arrested on March 1 but was freed the next day for pending investigation after agreeing to give urine samples, which the prosecution said tested positive for drugs, the report said.
Abdullah's brother Osama said that his brother was arrested on the background of fake charge and injustice.
"My brother was not attempting to flee, we do not flee. We have nothing to be ashamed of or afraid to confront," said Osama through his Facebook page.
Osama said that his brother was en-route to Beni Suef since father of one of his detained friends invited him for Iftar function.
On July 3 last year, the Egyptian army, with the participation of religious and political forces following a wide range of popular protests, removed President Morsi in an action considered by Morsi's supporters as a 'military coup' and his opponents as a 'popular revolution'.
Since Islamist ex-president Morsi's ouster last year, the Egyptian government has been cracking down on the Muslim Brotherhood and its supporters.
Morsi is currently in prison over charges of killing peaceful protesters, espionage, escaping from prison during the January 25 Revolution in 2011, and insulting the judiciary.
He has not been sentenced in any case so far.
