The film, to be released here by PVR pictures, is an adaptation of author Mitch Cullin's novel "A Slight Trick of The Mind".
McKellen, 76, will be seen playing the popular detective Sherlock Holmes in the British-American drama mystery film, helmed by Academy Award winning director Bill Condon.
Also starring Laura Linney, Hiroyuki Sanada and Milo Parker, the film is built around the franchise of Sherlock Holmes and presents him in an uncommon period of life.
Set in 1947, an ageing Holmes returns to an unsolved case.
