Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today reviewed the law and order scenario in the Garo Hills region, days after suspected Garo National Liberation Army militants exploded an IED at a busy market in East Garo Hills district.
The meeting was attended by district police chiefs of all five districts in the Garo Hills region and top police officers from the police headquarters.
The Chief Minister has directed the police to ensure that public places and road of strategic importance be sanitised to ensure public safety, a senior police officer told PTI.
He said the CM was also briefed on the alertness of the forces in the region following the attack, which left nine people injured.
Following the January 9 blast at Williamnagar, top police officers were camping at the Garo Hills division headquarter to take stock of the situation and to assess and monitor the law and order situation closely.
The police were maintaining high alert suspecting the proscribed GNLA militants might target the security forces in the coming days in a desperate attempt to regain its base in the region.
In the past two months, several groups and individual armed criminals have surrendered and operations have been intensified in the entire region, the officer said.
The state government, on the other hand, had announced it would reimburse the medical expenses incurred in connection with the treatment of those injured in the January 9 blast.
