Mumbai Youth Cong, NSUI protest over BHU incident

Members of the Mumbai unit of the Youth Congress and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the students' wing of Congress, today held protests outside Kalina campus of the Mumbai University over the violence in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) last week.
The protesters gathered outside the Kalina campus and raised slogans against the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar and burnt their effigies.
Several students, including women, and two journalists were injured in police action at BHU, where a protest on Saturday night against an alleged eve-teasing incident turned violent. An inquiry has been ordered into the violence on the campus.

Former president of NSUI's Mumbai unit and vice president of Mumbai Youth Congress, Suraj Singh Thakur, led the protest.
"Now, it's proven that the security forces entered the premises and went on a rampage by beating indiscriminately the female students, who were fighting for their rightful demands. The BHU incident has exposed the real face of the Yogi-led UP government. We condemn the tyrannical attitude of that government and demand that the injured students be given Rs two lakh compensation each," he said.
"The students have been complaining that they were and are facing eve-teasing inside the campus regularly and the varsity administration was not taking any action to stop the miscreants, rather they lathi-charged the girls," Thakur added.

The protesters also sought stern action against the BHU officials for "ordering lathi-charge" on the women students.
