In view of the favourable climatic conditions and market potential, the Nagaland government through the Department of Land Resources Development (LRD) is giving importance on plantation of Coffee and Rubber cultivation.

A three year comprehensive plan for development of coffee in the state has been prepared for a total area of 5000 hectares of land covering all the districts to be implemented with the support of Coffee Board of India, Department's Secretary Y Kikheto Sema told reporters.

Kikheto said that the LRD together with other departments would be taking up huge coffee plantation drive in every district as the state has been declared geographically and topographically suitable for coffee.

He said that once coffee production commences a farmer can earn at least Rs 3.75 lakh in a year.

The department is also promoting rubber cultivation on a large scale in the state in view of the high economic returns with the support of Rubber Board of India.

Rubber is successfully cultivated with good yields in the foothill areas and valley lands of Nagaland, including Peren, Wokha, Mokokchung, Dimapur, Mon districts, some parts of Longleng and negligible areas under Zunheboto and Tuensang districts.

The state has an overall potential to develop 4.6 lakh hectares of rubber plantation, out of which one lakh hectares has been targeted to be covered within this year, he said.
