National conference on cancer in Bhubaneswar on Nov 8

Around 500 delegates from across the country will attend a national conference on cancer here on November 8 to discuss various forms of the killer disease, rapid advances in methods of treatment and their practical application.
Experts from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and other cancer centres in New Delhi, Hyderabad and Guwahati would attend the meet being organised by the department of Oncosurgery of Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar.
"It is one of the unique conferences of its kind to be held in Odisha and benefit docors across various disciplines," medical director of IMS and SUM Hospital D K Ray told reporters here.

The participants would discuss various problems indigenous to Odisha with local oncologists, he said adding a large number of doctors from different specialities are expected to take part in the conference.
"Four most common cancers like breast, head and neck, colorectal and ovarian cancer will be discussed in the conclave," medical superintendent of SUM hospital P K Mohanty said.
On problems faced in cancer treatment in Odisha, Sunil Kumar Agarwala, head of the department of oncology at SUM Hospital, said while treating patients suffering from the disease same old practices are being followed in the state and most of these patients are handled by peripheral doctors.

The only regional cancer centre located in the state is not sufficient both in terms of manpower and resources to handle the huge rush of cancer patients, Ray said.
