NDMC's month-long sanitation drive ahead of festivals

Starting tomorrow, a month-long special cleanliness drive would be carried out in areas of north Delhi ahead of the festive season, the NDMC said today.
A comprehensive action plan has been prepared and its strict compliance would be ensured throughout the drive. Staff have been directed to clear garbage and debris, and tae up desilting of drains on a priority basis, North Delhi Mayor Preety Agarwal said.
Eid-ul-Adha or Bakr-Id and Dusshera are two of the major festivals next month.
The mayor said the drive will have participation of engineering, horticulture, licensing, health departments of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, and public participation through the RWAs, NGOs, market associations and other stakeholders to make it a big success.
"Daily ward-wise inspections of different areas, including municipal schools, hospitals, dispensaries, offices, would be carried out by officers, heads of departments, along with members of the Deliberative Wing," she said.
Municipal Commissioner Praveen Kumar Gupta said the drive would emphasise on micro-level monitoring over day-to-day cleanliness of all areas, lifting of solid waste, cleanliness of public urinals, community toilets.
Besides other issues such as taking preventive public health measures i.E. Control of water and vector-borne diseases, repair and maintenance of roads, footpaths, pavements, maintenance of parks, functioning of parks, streetlights and high-mast lights, would also be undertaken.
Gupta said the drive will focus on cleanliness of drains, 'dhalaos' (garage dump yards), dustbins and removal of silt and garbage from open sites.
"Equal focus will be on maintenance of roads, removal of debris, removal of encroachments from public land, upkeep of parks, pruning of trees, removal of horticulture waste from parks, roadsides," he said.
Agarwal said a special task force has been constituted by the commissioner, which will work to achieve the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission and undertake the sanitation work on priority basis during the drive.
Strict compliance of various court orders with regard to sanitation, burning of plastic or garbage, and ban on polythene carry bags, would be ensured during this month-long drive, the mayor added.
