Mahatma Gandhi's emphasis on the need for businesses to be run honestly and truthfully was the message of a discussion here which was organised jointly by Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) and the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) to pay homage to the Father of the Nation.
The programme on 'Ethical Business and Integrity' for the public sector, which was held yesterday to commemorate Martyrs' Day, was graced by TKA Nair, the Adviser to the Prime Minister.
Speaking on the occasion, Nair said that we have fallen short of the expectations of the Father of the Nation and of people like him who sacrificed their lives for our future.
"When we look around us, unfortunately, we see and hear about unwholesome tendencies, the evil forces within us.
"On occasions like this, we will have to make conscious efforts to sublimate these tendencies for the benefit of the country by reminding ourselves constantly about Gandhiji's life and work," he said.
The highlight of the programme was a lecture by Shobhana Radhakrishna, who explained in detail how Gandhi had advised businessmen to carry out trade with honesty and truthfulness.
Ethics and profitability are essential to the sustained operation of business and Gandhi had taught that ethical conduct is a continuum along which it is impossible to divide means from ends, she said.
