Sentiments also affected ahead of quarterly earning results of key index heavyweights.
Intense selling led the index to loss nearly 51 points to 8,559.00 during intra-day amid selling led by Realty and banking segments including PSU Banks, finances it was followed by metal, FMCG and infra counters.
The broader 50-share NSE Nifty opened higher at 8,623.90, later slid to 8,559.00 before closing at 8,603.45, showing a marginal loss 6.40 points, or 0.07 per cent.
Elsewhere in Asian closed mixed, European stocks were trading higher.
Major losers were PNB, Bank of Baroda, ACC, Cairn, Tata Power, Tata Motor, SBI and Coal India.
While notable gainers are UltraCemCo, Asian Paint, BPCL, Hindalco and Grasim.
Turnover in the cash segment declined to Rs 13,822.82 crore as against Rs 14,983.44 crore last Friday.
