"There is no clash between institutions in the country and that the media is free and vibrant in the country. The judiciary is also independent and we all have sacrificed for this judiciary," Ashraf said while addressing a function in Baluchistan province.

Army is also playing a vital role for the security and development of the country, the prime minister said, adding, "All the institutions are important and playing their due role in the development of the country."

His remarks were important in the wake of powerful army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani saying no single institution could define national interests or exceed its role under the Constitution.

"No individual or institution has the monopoly to decide what is right or wrong in defining the ultimate national interest," Kayani had said in an apparent riposte to orders issued by the Supreme Court against two retired generals for rigging the 1990 polls.

Reacting to Kayani's remarks, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry had asserted that the Supreme Court has the final jurisdiction over constitutional matters.

Ashraf also said it is first time in history of the country that a democratic government is completing its tenure.
