Home Minister Rajnath Singh today made a frank admission in the Lok Sabha that he was not aware of the news of the devastating earthquake hitting Nepal on Saturday till Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed him.
"I have no hesitation in admitting this in the House that I was not aware about this till I reached home (after an event). But the Prime Minister had already received the information... Honestly, the promptness I should have shown as the Home Minister and the information I should have got were not there," he said as he lauded Modi's quick response.
Replying to an impromptu debate on the earthquake, Singh said Modi and he were together at the inauguration of a new building of the National Intelligence Agency and as soon as he reached home he received a call from the Prime Minister.
"The Prime Minister told me that he had called a meeting at 3 P M. A big tragedy has happened and you would have received the information," Singh said, adding that he was not aware about it until then.
Modi called a quick meeting as the government responded with speed to the crisis in the neighbouring country as well as parts of India hit by the tremors. Several members of both sides praised Modi for the promptness shown by him in responding to the crisis.
Members of the Lower House also decided to donate a month's salary for the relief work in Nepal with a proposal by Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu being quickly accepted by the Opposition.
