In a new twist to the case of the 'missing' public well in Puzhal, allegedly encroached and closed and on which a building was erected, the Tiruvallur district administration has informed Madras High Court it was not sure about the existence of the well.
The administration stated this to the first bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and M M Sundresh.
The matter relates to a PIL by a service organization which said a public well in the village had vanished and that a commercial complex was built on it. It also sought a direction to restore the land to its original position.
After being ordered to submit a report to court, the administration in its counter said the revenue inspector conducted an inquiry which found there was a well in the survey number but it was not known whether it was privately owned or a public well
It also said records with Puzhal panchayat do not reveal any public well at the particular street in the village.
Meanwhile, the alleged encroacher filed a petition saying the commercial complex was built well within private property and that there was neither a well nor any encroachment.
Denying any resistance and presence of a large number of advocates to prevent authorities from sealing the premises,he aid it was completed without any disturbance as authorities had come with adequate police personnel. PTI COR
On nov 22, the Court had called for action against officials who did not act despite the issue being brought to their notice.
