Nuke Agri Research centre to come up at BCKU

In the first such facility in eastern region, a Nuclear Agriculture Research Centre will come up at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya here in Nadia district.
Agriculture Minister Malay Ghatak said the centre will come up at Mohanpur, where the main campus of BCKV lies.
"We have no proper infrastructure to preserve the onions, for which 40 per cent of the products get damaged," Ghatak said, adding the centre will enable farmers to make the agri-produce more fresh.
BCKV Vice-Chancellor C Kole said that out of the 39 projects submitted to Board of Research in Nuclear Science (BRNS), Union government, from various universities in the eastern region, the BCKV has got nod for the said mega project.
BRNS Scientific Secretary S G Markandeya said while the first green revolution had taken place through high breed and high yielding seeds, the second green revolution will happen through the use of nuclear and it would be called evergreen revolution.
Pro-Vice Chancellor, BCKV, B Mondal said that gama rays would be use in nuclear agricultural research in the new centre in BCKV.
Joint Convenors P Hazra and S Dutta said the Gama Rays may be used in the fields like Molecular Breeding, Chemical Improvement for shelf life expansion of crops.
