Objectionable tweet:HC exempts Teesta from personal appearance

In a relief to activist Teesta Setalvad, the Gujarat High Court today exempted her from personal appearance before police every month in connection with a case in which she is accused of posting objectionable pictures of Hindu deities on a popular social networking site.
Justice J B Pardiwala passed the order while hearing Setalvad's plea seeking exemption from personal appearance.
A lower court had imposed the condition of personal appearance on Teesta after an FIR was filed against her at Ghatlodia police station here in August last year.
Apart from exempting Teesta from appearing in person, the HC also asked the police to inform her seven days in advance to appear before them whenever she is needed here for the purpose of investigation.

The FIR was filed against Teesta by a VHP activist, Raju Patel, for allegedly putting objectionable pictures of Hindu god and goddess on Twitter.
Ghatlodia police are investigating the case.

Teesta had later removed the objectionable posts following an outcry.
She was booked under sections 153(a) (promoting enmity between two religious groups, and 205(a) (committing a deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting religion or religious beliefs) of IPC, besides various sections of IT Act.
She was granted a pre-arrest bail by the city sessions court with a condition that she will have to appear before Ghatlodia police station on the fifth day of every month.

Teesta then approached the HC in August seeking modification of the bail condition.
Granting her an interim relief, the HC had in September allowed Teesta to appear at the police station on any day in the first week of every month instead of the fifth day.
In the same case, she had filed a plea before the HC seeking setting aside of the case against her, which is pending.
