The army has retaliated against back-to-back Taliban attacks in Bannu and Rawalpindi this week by bombarding hideouts in North Waziristan, which claimed over 50 lives.
Military sources have claimed that among those killed were 36 foreign terrorists and top Pakistani Taliban commanders, including the group's former interim chief.
"Prime Minister chaired a meeting where the security situation in Pakistan was reviewed. This meeting was convened in the wake of recent terror incidents in Bannu, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Mastung and Karachi," said a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.
The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, ISI chief Lt Gen Zahir-ul-Islam, DGMO Maj Gen Amir Riaz and DGMI Maj Gen Sarfaraz Sattar.
An air offensive targeted militant hideouts in Mir Ali and Miranshah amid calls for the government to act decisively against the Taliban and its affiliates.
However, Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer said the air strikes were not a prelude to a military offensive and jets bombed the hideouts in retaliation for recent attacks.
