Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science, Technology, Environment and Forest headed by Rajya Sabha MP Ashwani Kumar today stressed the need for setting up waste treatment plants and better traffic management in the city.
The committee would discuss about the need to set up solid waste management and sewerage treatment projects for Amritsar so that such projects could be brought in on priority basis for the larger interest of city people and visiting tourists, Kumar told reporters here.
To a query on the traffic chaos around Golden Temple, he said that the existing infrastructure needs to be upgraded, besides regulating traffic around the temple and widening of the road network.
He also said that poor quality of animal feed and polluted atmosphere was affecting milk production in the country.
Adding further he said the committee would also discuss about contaminated water and air quality in Punjab.
The Parliamentary panel paid obeisance in the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple here today. They also paid tribute to the martyrs at historic Jallianwalla Bagh as well as visited Durgiana Temple.
Kumar also informed that the committee members would interact with members of civil society organisations and NGOs on state and central level tomorrow.
The Rajya Sabha MP said the report prepared by the committee will be submitted with Government of India which would inform the Parliament about the implementation of the committee's recommendations within a period of six months.
