Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to constitute a committee to be headed by him for the commemoration of 550th birth anniversary of Sikh Guru Nanak Dev.
The 550th Prakash Utsav of the first Guru of the Sikhs will be celebrated in 2019.
He in a letter said it would be most appropriate that the prime minister heads this committee under the aegis of Ministry of Culture to impart a sense of purpose to the efforts, according to an official release.
The chief minister also sought special assistance from the Centre to the state government for both commemorative and infrastructure projects, especially in places associated with the life of the first Guru of the Sikhs.
He informed Modi that a detailed report is being prepared and sent to him shortly.
Amarinder Singh said the state government had decided to commemorate the event in a befitting manner so that the teachings and message of the great Guru could be showcased before the country as well as the rest of the world.
The chief minister also pointed out that a state-level committee had been constituted to draw up an action plan and a programme of events.
