Delhi government today gave nod to a pilot project for using bio-digester sewage and water treatment technology to improve sewage facility and revive a dying pond in Aya Nagar area in south-west Delhi.
According to the government, the pilot project will be first implemented at Aya Nagar which is a village cum unauthorised colony as it does not have sewer line.
The project - Sanitation Improvement Plan for Aya Nagar - was proposed by Delhi Dialogue Commission (DDC) which will be implemented by Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).
The project was given a go-ahead by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at a meeting with the DDC yesterday.
Apart from better sewerage facility, the project aims at reviving a pond in Aya Nagar, which was once used to fulfil the water needs of all the families in the locality, and has now turned into swampy dumpyard as heaps of garbage and gallons of sewage water flows into it daily.
The government said that the results of the pilot project would be analysed to take a considered decision of scaling it up in other localities.
"Delhi lacks efficient sanitation management systems and 50 per cent population of this state has no access to sewer systems. More than 2,200 colonies have no sewer connection and 1,600 colonies have partial sewer system," said Delhi Dialogue Commission (DDC) vice-chairman Ashish Khetan.
According to the government, each house in Aya Nagar has a septic tank. As per the plan, bio-digester would be installed and a water level controller pump, that will throw extra water out and treated sewage into outside drains, would be provided.
