In a bid to improve their image, Mumbai Police have issued a circular stating that in-charge of police stations in the megapolis will be held responsible to any acts of misbehaviour of their subordinates with the public.
According to the circular issued by Mumbai Commissioner of Police Ahmad Javed on November 9, there have been reports of high handedness and use of force by police officials as reaction to provocations from citizens.
"Police officers should take a professional recourse to such provocations and not take the law into their hands. Police misbehaviour is recorded and given to media houses. This tarnishes the image of the police force.
Police Inspectors in-charge of police stations and officers heading different units should regularly sensitise their subordinates," the circular said.
It further said the police inspectors and officers heading the police stations and units will be held responsible along with the policemen guilty of misbehaviour.
In several instances these acts of policemen have been shown on media and thereby acts of a few men are tarnishing the name of the entire police force, it added.
If any policeman was found to be behaving in an over-aggressive manner, disciplinary action would be taken against him and his seniors too will be held responsible for the same, the circular said.
"We need to ensure that the image of the Mumbai police is not tarnished because of the action of a few officers," it said.
The circular has been issued against the backdrop of instances of alleged unjustified use of power and objectionable behaviour by policemen that had come to light repeatedly in the recent past.
