Prafulla Mahanta 'receives death threats'

Former Assam Chief Minister and AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has received death threats and extortion demand by a person claiming to have done so on behalf of the ULFA-Independent c-in-c Paresh Baruah.
Mahanta filed a case in Dispur police station here about the threat and demands made to him since the Rajya Sabha election on February seven, the two-time Chief Minister told reporters here.
Tracing the calls made from two mobile phone numbers, police today arrested one Bhola Barua, alias Deepak Gogoi, who claimed he was making the threat and demand on behalf of Paresh Baruah, police sources said.

Mahanta, who has Z Plus security, said the threats started coming on the day prior to the RS polls and intensified after the results were declared.
Without mentioning the amount demanded, he said threats to kill him with AK-47 rifle were made either by mobile calls or messages.
Mahanta had also said he informed the Director General of Police about the threats before filing the FIR.
Asked if he suspected a political conspiracy, he said "there may be and it will be revealed by police investigations".
An unsuccessful assassination attempt was made by ULFA in 1997 on Mahanta accusing him of organising secret killings against families of outfit members.
