Puthia Tamizhagam leader Krishnaswamy today asked the Tamil Nadu government to frame a policy taking into consideration the increasing voice against liquor.
Talking to reporters here, he demanded convening of the assembly session and also an all party meeting for discussing the issue.
The Government should respect the sentiments of the people and review its policy. "Though total prohibition is not possible immediately, it can be implemented step by step" he said.
Initially the bar facility could be closed, as 50 per cent of the people would not drink if the facility was not there. The Government should close the shops near the schools and places of worship and reduce the working hours of the liquor shops, he said.
The government could emulate Kerala regarding phased manner of bringing prohibition.
The students instead of taking law into their hands could adopt villages and create awareness about evils of drinking and rescue drunkards from the addiction.
There were no two opinions about projects being implemented out Rs 25,000 crore revenue from the liquor shops. But the government should understand that no country in the world was so much dependent on liquor money for running the government, he said.
The Government should not see pros and cons or profit and loss when the People were against a particular policy of the government. It should take steps to close the shops in a phased manner, he said.
