Top bureaucrats in the city government today demanded strict action against those allegedly involved in assaulting a District Magistrate two days back and sought adequate security to effectively discharge their duties.
The bureaucrats, at a meeting of AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh -Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories) IAS officers Association, deliberated on the assault on North West Delhi District Magistrate Sanjay Goel and urged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Home Ministry and Lt Governor Najeeb to ensure better security to them.
The meeting of the Association was called to discuss the issue of assault on Goel who alleged that supporters of BJP MP Udit Raj assaulted him and held him hostage in his office on Thursday for removing encroachment in a North -West Delhi locality.
Police has already arrested three persons in the case. Raj has accused police of acting under pressure from bureaucrats.
"Taking this incident into account, the Union Territory Cadre IAS Association met today and deliberated on the issue. The Association demanded action against those involved in the incident.
"The Association also resolved to request Chief Minister, LG and Union Home Ministry to provide all necessary infrastructure and police support for effective discharge of duty by the district magistrates, additional district magistrates and sub-divisional magistrates," Association's secretary Ambarasu told reporters.
He said that the association resolved that such incidents would not deter the officers from discharging their duties fearlessly.
The alleged assault of Goel was caught on CCTV camera installed in his office.
The police have registered a case under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 342 (wrongful confinement), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC based on Goel's complaint.
Meanwhile, Udit Raj's office issued a statement requesting the Centre to apprise Goel of his role and responsibility.
"Udit Raj requested Jitendra Singh, Minister of Department of Personnel and Training and Chief Secretary of Government of NCT of Delhi to apprise Goel about his responsibilities as a DM so that Raj can serve his constituency effectively," said the statement.
