The government has taken up the various technical issues being faced by the loss-making Air India in operating its fleet of Dreamliner aircraft, Parliament was told today.
The Boeing 787-800 Dreamliners have technical reliability issues involving aircraft software as well as failure of some of the components, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma told Rajya Sabha said in response to a query.
"The issue of Dreamliners' technical reliability has been strongly taken up with the manufacturer, Boeing Company. A high-level team of Boeing has discussed these issues with Civil Aviation Ministry, Directorate General of Civil Aviation and top Air India management," Sharma said.
As a part of its fleet expansion plans, Air India had in January, 2006, placed orders with Boeing Company for 68 aircraft, including 27 Dreamliners and 41 B-777s and B-737- 800s.
It had received the first 787 Dreamliner in September, 2012, after a delay of almost four years in its scheduled delivery.
Air India currently has 21 Boeing 787-800s in its combined fleet of 131 planes. However, several of the Dreamliners have been grounded in the past due to technical issues.
Sharma told the House that Boeing is actively involved with Air India in addressing reliability issues that have beset the Dreamliners.
Besides, Boeing on-site support has been provided in Mumbai and Delhi, he said, adding that a Boeing team has been called on site at the Air India facility since the induction of these planes in the airline in 2012 for accomplishment of reliability modifications.
Boeing is providing technical support continuously to Air India for the Dreamliners for technical modifications and improvements for resolving the issues, he added.
"It may be noted that these issues have not affected the safety of the passengers or aircraft," Sharma said.
