Raj Kumar Gupta's critically acclaimed debut 'Aamir', starring Rajiv Khandelwal, is getting a Tamil remake.
UTV has licensed the 2008 hit film to Shoundaryan Pictures owned by Vidyal Raju. The Tamil version will be directed by debutant Anand Krishna. The lead role essayed by Khandelwal in the original will be reprised by Vidarth of 'Mynaa' fame.
"We are excited to bring a remake of our first UTV Spotboy release 'Aamir' and which also started our successful association with Raj Kumar Gupta and Amit Trivedi. We have also remade 'A Wednesday' in the past in Tamil and Telugu and have witnessed that great content finds its way to the audiences hearts," Siddharth Roy Kapur, Managing Director - Studios, Disney UTV, said in a statement.
Gupta who is currently directing 'Ghanchakkar', his third film with UTV post 'Aamir' and 'No One Killed Jessica', is excited about this development.
"I'm really happy to hear that my first film 'Aamir' is now being remade in Tamil. The Tamil audience is very discerning and I'm confident that the Tamil remake of Aamir, which was a great story, will garner as much acclaim as its Hindi version!," he said.
Hindi cinema has been importing content from its southern counterparts for sometime now with films like 'Wanted', 'Ready' and 'Rowdy Rathore', all remakes of southern films, becoming a member of the 100 crore club.
Director Krishna, who is debuting with the Tamil remake, said, "In the Hindi version, Raj Kumar Gupta has shown the underbelly of Mumbai and I will be showing the other side of Chennai. The original film has a very powerful screenplay and I hope that I can create the same magic with the remake."
Other Hindi films that have been remade in South are 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' as 'Poi Solla Poram' in Tamil, 'A Wednesday' as 'Unnaipol Oruvan' in Tamil and 'Eenadu' in Telugu and 'Delhi Belly' as 'Settai' in Tamil.
