NFR officials said Assam-bound trains were being diverted through Mal, Hasimara, Banarhat routes taking longer hours, as railway personnel were at work to repair the crack on pillar seven which appeared yesterday following overnight showers that softened the earth on its base.
The stretch of track connects Sevoke, North Bengal with North East.
Meanwhile, with no rains reported in past 24 hours, water started receding from vast areas of Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar but the marooned people still remained lodged in camps as the situation did not return to normal.
The rivers Teesta and Karala were still swollen but there was no further rise in water level, officials in two districts said.
Yesterday, 11 sluice gates were opened in Teesta to release 18 cusecs of water, the officials said. The rains have affected around 4,000 people.
