A retired CRPF jawan died allegedly in police custody with his family members blaming police excesses for the death, prompting the department to order an inquiry.
A Deputy Superintendent of Police-level officer has been asked to probe the death.
Narrating the sequence of the incident, SP Happy Guptan today said that a police team, which had gone to sort out some dispute, was allegedly attacked by retired hawaldar of CRPF Imtiyaz Ali and his kin in Madhavpur village.
Subsequently, an FIR was registered against them at Fakharpur police station and on June 7 when a police team went to arrest Imtiyaz he tried to escape on a motorcycle, the SP said, adding that he slipped and sustained head injury in the process.
Gupta said when Imtiyaz's condition deteriorated he was sent to Lucknow by the police for treatment where he died yesterday.
However, Imtiyaz's family members in an application moved before the SP and a court alleged that half-a-dozen policemen, including Station House Officer Fakharpur Brijesh Yadav, assaulted the victim during custody in which he was seriously injured and later died.
The family members have demanded that a case of murder be lodged against the policemen, including the SHO, and action be taken against them.
The SP has handed over the inquiry to the Circle Officer of Kaisarganj.
Meanwhile, heavy police and PAC contingents have been deployed in the village.
