The cross-border attack by the militants were launched from the Afghanistan side, hitting a Pakistani checkpoint where the soldiers were posted.
"Four Pakistan Army soldiers were killed and four others were injured due to rocket fire," army said in a statement.
The military, however, did not mention which militant group launched the attack.
The rounds fired from Afghanistan side opposite Khyber Agency by terrorists hit a 8,000 feet high Pakistani post in Akhandwala Pass, it said.
Khyber region is one of the seven semi-autonomous tribal regions where the Pakistan military has been battling the Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants for years.
The country's seven tribal districts close to the Afghan border are rife with local insurgents which are said to be the strongholds of Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants.
