The Punjab government today took in-principle decision to spend Rs 3500 crore on providing 100 per cent sewer cover, water supply and other amenities under the 'urban mission' to strengthen the urban infrastructure.
Presiding over a high-level meeting to review status of urban projects, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said the state government would develop world class infrastructure in towns and cities and make them 'Swachh cities'.
In order to give shape to the state's urban mission, Rs 1500 crore have been released to the department of local government and directions issued to release next installment of the same amount, he said.
He asked the local bodies department to accord priority on development and strengthening of roads and streets in the areas where sewerage and water supply works are completed.
Badal gave a four-month timeframe for completing the works.
He said pre-audit of development projects under urban mission should not hamper the pace of work and asked Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal to supervise their functioning.
Cautioning against laxity, he said no development project should suffer due to delay in third party audit and asked the Chief Secretary and Secretary, local government department, to take necessary step in that direction.
Notably, the Punjab Government is spending Rs 10,000 crore on the provisioning and strengthening of development projects in both urban and rural missions.
