The government would need a huge Rs 6 lakh crore in the next five years for training programmes to make people employable, a Union Minister said today.
"Countries which have high skilled workforce have high per capita income. Education is important but 12 years of education will not make you employable but 12 weeks of skill training will. We are now integrating it with education which should have done years ago," Minister of State for Skill Development Rajiv Pratap Rudy said at the launch of mass mobilisation campaign for Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana.
The government will need Rs 6 lakh crore to train people in India and make them employable, the minister said.
"We are planning to launch National Skill Mission on July 15 which is National Skills Day. This will be one of most ambitious programme. We need industry to work with us to meet our mission of skilling 2.4 million people," said Rudy, who along with Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad inaugurated the scheme.
Speaking at the launch, industry body COAI said that telecom sector is expected to generate 4.1 million additional jobs in the next five years.
"Making internet available across Bharat will require an additional investment of around Rs 500,000 crore over the next five years with the sector expected to generate about 4.1 million jobs by 2020," COAI Chairperson Himanshu Kapania said today.
Under the campaign launched today, COAI in partnership with vocational training firm Centum Learning has developed a mobile phone base system that will attempt to mobilise people to join training programme.
Telecom operators will send out SMSes to their subscribers to create awareness. Interested subscribers can give missed call to a toll free number.
The subscriber will get an automated call from that number which will capture details of the person interested in training. The details will be shared with skill council and the person will be asked to visit nearest Centum centre.
The pilot campaign will be started in Bihar covering subscriber base of 1.5 crore people and then spread across country.
"Telecom operators have done good work and they can still do better. Sometime people get irritated by multiple options in the system ... I expect you to make the process of registration more simple," Prasad said.
