Senior Congress leader Manish Tewari today said that the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Aam Aadmi Party have "betrayed" their fears by targeting Amarinder Singh in unison, and alleged that the people of Punjab are disillusioned with the Akalis, who have "ruined" the state.
"Both SAD and AAP have realised that people of Punjab have already made up their minds as who was going to be their next chief minister," Tewari said in a statement here today.
The former Union minister pointed out that both, the Akalis as well as AAP leaders, instead of listing out any positive agenda for the state or any achievements, only criticised Amarinder at their respective political conferences.
He said the Akalis and AAP's fears are "understandable" as Amritsar MP commands the confidence of the masses across Punjab.
"Amarinder has a proven record and has been tried and tested," the senior Congress leader said, while pointing out, "people of Punjab are eagerly awaiting his becoming the chief minister for good governance."
Tewari alleged that the people were disillusioned with the Akalis, who have "ruined" the state politically, economically, financially and socially during the last nine years beyond redemption.
"On the other hand, the AAP is a bunch of opportunists who have started hiving together in a misplaced illusion of making out something big," he stated.
"But, people of Punjab are politically wise enough not to commit any mistake lest they end up regretting their decision like the people in Delhi are regretting now for having elected AAP to power," he said.
Tewari said, while the Amarinder raised the issues concerning the state "like falling educational standards and unemployment and suggested the way out also, the Akalis and the AAP had only one point agenda to criticise Amarinder."
"In the process they only betrayed their fears of having to face the most popular leader of Punjab," he said.
Besides a proven record of good governance, "Amarinder's popularity has been proved beyond any doubt whether by defeating Arun Jaitley in Amritsar (in 2014 Lok Sabha polls) or the mobilisation of about five lakh people in Bathinda (on December 15) to attend his taking over function.
