Describing the Haryana government's move of constituting a separate committee for managing the affairs of Gurdwaras in that state as "direct interference in the affairs of the Sikhs", Shiromani Akali Dal today said that it was a "direct assault on the Sikh psyche".
In a unanimously passed resolution, the Legislative party of SAD, which met here under the leadership of Parkash Singh Badal, said "the step of the Congress party was aimed at creating fissures in the Sikh panth, thereby weakening its religious and political power."
The party, in a statement said, that the unwarranted action of the Haryana government had led to a constitutional crisis and the immediate need of the hour was that the Union government must intervene in the matter.
It said that by acting in such a manner, the Congress government in Haryana has even surpassed the British Raj in meddling in the affairs of the Sikhs.
The party was also of the opinion that by constituting a separate committee the Haryana government has shown grave disrespect to the mandate given by the Sikhs during the elections of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC).
It said that SGPC elections were fought on the issue of separate committee in Haryana and the Sikh voters of the state had trounced all the protagonists of this committee and had given a clear cut mandate against any such move by ensuring the victory of SAD candidates on all the 11 seats.
