Unhappy with the damage caused to stadiums under its jurisdiction, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation is now mulling a complete ban on use of such sporting facilities for wedding functions.
South Delhi Mayor Shyam Sharma made the announcement today after inspecting stadiums at Punjabi Bagh and Madipur. He also directed officials to ensure improvement in the upkeep of stadiums so that the players can make proper use of them.
"Marriage functions at stadium in Madipur is already disallowed. We are now thinking of banning it at our facility in Punjabi Bagh as the infrastructure has been found to be damaged after such events," he said.
He, however, said, that a portion of the stadiums would be designated for renting them out for "religious activities".
The Mayor said the issue of proper maintenance of stadiums was discussed in a meeting chaired by Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel last week. The meeting was attended by mayors and commissioners of the three corporations of the city.
Sharma had yesterday inspected the under construction multi-storey building of the West Zone headquarters at Rajouri Garden, Ring Road.
He directed the engineering department to expedite the remaining work within a week.
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has four zones -- South, Central, West and Najafgarh. At present, there is no separate headquarter building for the West Zone with its offices scattered at far-off places, resulting in a lot of difficulties to the visitors.
The new building of the West Zone is being commissioned in the central area for an amount of Rs 26 crore.
"It will be equipped with all modern office equipment apart from having greenery, rainwater harvesting facility, lifts and adequate parking. All offices of the West Zone will be housed under one roof," the SDMC said.
Sharma also inspected the under construction underground parking at Subhash Nagar. He was accompanied by several senior SDMC officials and councillors.
