A short session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly will commence here tomorrow against the backdrop of demands by some political parties that India boycott the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka in November on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
While both ruling AIADMK and DMK have demanded that the Centre stay away from the meeting, parties like PMK and VCK want the 234-member state Assembly to pass a resolution in this regard.
The AIADMK-dominated Tamil Nadu Assembly had in 2011 passed a resolution seeking economic sanctions against Colombo to mount pressure on it to accord equal status to Tamils.
Early this year, it demanded that India move a resolution in the UN Security Council for a referendum for separate Tamil Eelam (Homeland) and urged New Delhi to stop calling Colombo a friendly nation.
Among others, a ban on illegal sand mining is expected to figure during the session.
The Business Advisory Committee under Speaker P Dhanapal will tomorrow decide the duration of the Assembly session.
The opening day's proceedings are expected to be devoted for paying homage to Yercaud AIADMK MLA Perumal, who passed away recently.
