A man was killed and another injured after a speeding Fortuner car allegedly mowed them down in east Delhi's Pandav Nagar in the early hours today, police said.
The victims were employed with a construction company that has been handed a contract by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for construction on NH-24, they added.
Jasvir Singh (28), employed as a safety officer with the construction firm, was supervising the installation of a safety board when the accident occurred.
While he was standing there, the Fortuner, that was coming from Nizamuddin Dargah's side and heading towards Ghaziabad, hit Singh and labourer, Deepak (18), said a senior police officer.
Singh was standing near his car and issuing instructions to two labourers -- Keshav and Deepak -- about putting up the board.
The Fortuner hit Singh and he was sandwiched between his car and the errant vehicle. The driver did not stop the vehicle and dragged Singh for about 100 metres and his leg was severed and thrown on the roadside, he added.
Singh died on the spot while Deepak sustained minor injuries to his leg and was discharged from a hospital today. Keshav had a narrow escape, the officer said.
The deceased belonged to Agra and is survived by his parents, wife, a brother and a three-month-old baby.
Police said they are trying to identify the offending vehicle.
There were no streetlights on the stretch and eyewitnesses are not sure about the colour of the vehicle even though it is suspected to be white in colour, said the officer.
Police have contacted garages in the area to determine whether any Fortuner has come for repair. They are also looking for CCTV footages on the stretch between Nizamuddin and Ghaziabad to find out the registration number of the vehicle that killed Singh.
In another incident, a man, in his 40s, was hit by an unidentified vehicle on the Bypass Road behind Rajghat in central Delhi, the police said.
The body was lying on the road for close to an hour before the police were informed. The body's face was run over by a heavy vehicle and it has been difficult to identify it, they added.
There were no identity cards found with the deceased that could help the police ascertain his identity, police said.
We have questioned the "vagabonds" in the area but no clues have been found so far, they said.
It is suspected that the deceased could have been a helper of some vehicle and had probably fallen off while he was asleep and was then run over.
