'State steps taken to implement order to regulate student politics in campuses'

Slamming the state government for not following its earlier order to regulate student politics in campuses, the Kerala High Court today directed it to inform the court of the steps taken to implement the directive.

A division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice A K Jayasankaran Nambiar, while giving the order, observed that campuses are not exclusively meant for political activities.

Considering a plea filed by L S Ajoy, seeking its direction to prohibit student politics in all campuses, the Court said that there was nothing wrong in having faith in political ideology, but intolerance was the main issue.

The petitioner alleged that the government failed to implement the High Court order of 2004, directing that rules be framed to control students politics in educational institutions in the state.

The bench granted three weeks time to the state government to inform the Court of it's stand on framing guidelines on the matter.

Ajoy, in his petition, referred to the killing of a student leader in a government college in Ernakulam early this month.

The High Court said that the violence and political murder of the student was very regrettable.
