State governments are taking several steps such as setting up of single window system for approvals with an aim to improve ease of doing business, a top official said today.
Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) Secretary Ramesh Abhishek said that as many as 17 states have made laws to provide single window system.
Powers of several departments have been given to one person to man these systems, he said.
He said for the first time better performing states like Andhra Pradesh are hand-holding the less performing ones to improve their investment climate and their rankings.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have jointly topped the 2016 all-India State/Union Territory-wise Ease of Doing Business rankings.
Talking about this year's ranking, the secretary said that 'perception' is an important component in ease of doing business, so "this year, we are checking the perceptions also".
"We are doing user survey on every parameter...We need to make things simpler and faster," he said, adding the DIPP is also pushing ministries and regulators to help improving business climate.
Earlier authorities used to check every container at ports but now it has been asked to check only 10 per cent of the containers to facilitate movement of goods.
India ranks 130th in the World Bank's Doing Business Report for 2017. The government has been encouraging states to improve business climate to better the country's position in the global list.
