Steel and Mines Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has asked CPSEs to complete the construction of toilets in schools, under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, by March next year.
"While reviewing the progress of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Tomar advised the CPSEs to ensure that the identification and blocking of schools and placement of work orders must be completed by December and construction of toilet in schools should be completed by March, 2015," an official statement said.
CPSEs under the Ministry of Steel had earlier decided to construct 3,500 toilets at an aggregate cost of Rs 100 crore. CPSEs under the Mines Ministry had pledged to allocate Rs 7.5 crore in the project.
Steel PSEs have already identified 2,400 toilet blocks. Mines PSEs have been identified 135 schools for toilet blocks. The work on identifying the remaining is currently on.
"Quality of construction must be of high standards and long-lasting, as it has a bearing on the reputation of the organisation and the ministry," the Minister said reviewing the progress on the project.
Heads of almost all the CPSEs, under the administrative control of steel and mines ministries, were present at the review meeting held last evening.
Construction of toilets in respect of both the ministries is in preliminary stage and is expected to gain momentum by the year-end, the statement said.
