Condemning the racial attacks on people from north-east India, a student body today demanded setting up of a help desk for north-easterners in all metro cities to ensure immediate help.
"The Centre should consider setting up a dedicated help desk for north-east people in all metro cities in view of the rising hate crimes our people are facing," North East Students Organisation (NESO) Chairman Samuel Jyrwa told PTI.
The NESO, is an umbrella organisation of students' bodies in the north eastern states.
Jyrwa said the desk should be headed by a senior police officer or preferably an IAS officer to ensure prompt and immediate help in case of any reported hate crimes in these cities.
In the past 72 hours, five persons were attacked by local gangs allegedly in hate crime incidents in Bangalore and in Gurgaon.
In both the incidents, Jyrwa said, the police could not reach the spot on time thereby causing severe injuries to the victims due to the attack.
The help desk could facilitate immediate rescue services if the need arises once the centre is made known to the people, he said.
Condemning the incidents, the NESO leader said he would take up the matter with the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his deputy Khiren Rijiju.
NESO had earlier this year taken up the matter with the Home Ministry when Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania was killed in Delhi.
