The National Green Tribunal has directed a committee set up by it to implement its order banning dumping of debris on the banks of Yamuna, to submit a proposal for the development of the river's banks.
A bench headed by NGT chairperson Swatanter Kumar has given the panel time till the next date of hearing on April 23 to present the proposal before it.
"We direct the committee constituted under order of this tribunal of January 31, 2013, shall submit its proposal before the tribunal before the next date of hearing as to how and in what manner the banks of river Yamuna can be developed rather than making it mere garbage dumping site," the bench, also comprising judicial member Justice P Jyothimani, said.
The panel headed by the Secretary, MoEF, and including the Vice Chairman of DDA and Secretary of Department of Irrigation of Uttar Pradesh, has been directed by the NGT to ensure that a complete proposal for development and beautification of the river's banks is finalised in its next meeting.
Meanwhile, the tribunal has asked the heads of various civic agencies of Delhi, the Chairman of Delhi Metro Corporation and the Principal Secretary of Irrigation of UP to state on affidavit the details of the amount of waste generated in the National Capital Territory (NCT) and the mode of its collection and disposal by them.
It has given them three weeks' time from March 21 to file their respective affidavits.
Earlier on February 28, the NGT had issued show cause notices to DMRC, CPWD and the Department of Horticulture, New Delhi, after the court commissioners appointed by the tribunal to inspect the river's banks in their report said fresh debris was being dumped on the Yamuna's banks by these agencies.
On January 31, the NGT had banned dumping of debris on the banks of river Yamuna and had directed the states of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh to remove the rubble immediately, on a plea filed by one Manoj Mishra.
