The project, brainchild of local district administration, aims to serve the poor and the needy people with the help of social organisations and philanthropists.
It was launched here at the suvidha canteen in the DC Complex on the occasion of Labour Day.
A 'thali', comprising a bowl of lentil and four chapattis, would be provided at Rs 10 to adults, while it would be free for children under the age of 10 years, deputy commissioner (DC) Sonali Giri said.
Both the Congress MLAs representing the district -- Angad Singh and Darshan Lal Mangupur -- who also partook the meals along with Giri on the occasion, lauded the initiative of the district administration.
Giri said in the initial, conceptual stages of the project, she was worried about source of the finances for the project but response from the social organisations and philanthropists encouraged her to go ahead with it (project) and the response of the public today had convinced her that it was going to be a run-away success.
The project would be reviewed after a fortnight, said the DC.
Deputy Medical Commissioner Dr Dyal Saroop said health authorities would keep a tab on the served food by ensuring its regular sampling from time to time.
