The tanker going to Chennai from Mathura overturned this morning after the driver lost control over the vehicle about five km away from the district headquarters here, Kotwali Police Station In-Charge, Shailesh Mishra said.
Following the mishap, gas started to leak from the tanker leading to panic in the area. An alert was sounded in nearby areas and a camp was set up at Bamhodi village to accommodate people evacuated from the vicinity of the site, an official said.
In a similar accident on December 28, a tanker carrying propane overturned near Gorakhpur Gurudwara on the same route, following which traffic on the Highway was closed for 34 hours, District Collector Bharat Yadav said.
A rescue team has been called from Jabalpur to empty the tanker so that traffic can be restored by evening. Strict action will be taken against the firm operating the tanker, he said.
