A Tanzanian national was held at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here today for allegedly trying to smuggle out narcotics worth Rs 10 lakh in international market.
Officials said the incident was reported at about 1:00 PM when CISF personnel detected the suspicious movements of the person identified as K Risasi Ahmad who arrived at the airport to take a flight to Dar es Salaam. He was asked to go for a detailed checking by the sleuths.
They said Ahmad, in the meantime, allegedly dumped his bag containing the narcotic between two pillars at the airport terminal and after he got a green signal at the detailed frisking, he proceeded for immigration.
Subsequently, the same Central Industrial Security Force jawan who had picked Ahmad saw the dumped bag and after CCTV checks, sleuths apprehended him from the immigration queue.
Ahmad, a Tanzanian national on business visa to India, had put on a pullover to "avoid detection", they said.
"He was intercepted and was asked to open the locked bag which he had dumped sensing strong security checks. The 10 kg drug, identified as pseudoephedrine by anti-narcotics sleuths, was seized from the bag," they said.
Ahmad was later arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau and it is estimated the drug was worth Rs 10 lakh, they added.
