Tata Trusts partners MPEDA to support fishermen

Tata Trusts, a philanthropic organisation, has tie-up with MPEDA, under Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to support fishermen in better fishing practises, develop market linkages and improve the quality seafood exports.
Through this partnership, Tata Trusts and Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) will help undertake collaborative efforts and activities to bring better living conditions to the rural communities whose livelihoods are linked to fisheries and aquaculture, Tata Trust said in a statement.
The first phase of collaboration will see in Andhra Pradesh and later in other states, the statement said.
Tata Trusts and MPEDA will address several key issues facing the fisheries sector including low volume of catch, low productivity in aquaculture and depletion of fishery resources in sea.
It will also help resolve issues of low prices due to several layers of intermediaries, and help better access markets as well as a lack of safe, hygienic conditions.
MPEDA Chairman Leena Nair said, this MoU will provide collaborative approach to work towards betterment of fishery dependent families.
Tata Trusts Secretary Burzis S Taraporevala said, this collaboration shows the Trusts' legacy of implementing initiatives to provide sustainable livelihoods.
Tata Trusts are among the country's oldest, non-sectarian philanthropic organisations that work in several areas of community development in the areas of natural resources management, rural and urban livelihoods and poverty alleviation, education, enhancing civil society and governance, health and media, arts, crafts and culture.
The MPEDA, is the nodal agency for promotion of seafood exports.
